POLYPHENOLS…huh?

Polyphenols are the substances in red wine, olive oil, and more foods that have such great health benefits. WHY should you care about POLYPHENOLS? You are in luck because I just facilitated a training session on natural supplements for a group and can explain! Put your “thinking caps” on and dive into these details…

First, let us understand their relationship to antioxidants better. The antioxidants we consume in food are called exogenous antioxidants. The body is ALSO capable of creating antioxidants called endogenous antioxidants. They often have very short life cycles and are used very rapidly in metabolic processes. In addition to providing exogenous antioxidant protection against free-radical damage to cells, polyphenols also support the endogenous production and recycling of antioxidants made in the body. Therefore, polyphenols are important! MAIN POINT-antioxidants produced in our body are supported by polyphenols. Both antioxidants and polyphenols have great health benefits!

I currently take natural supplements which contains a great daily dose of polyphenols! They are in an energy blend which helps give you a boost each day, clearer thinking along with additional health benefits. There is also a brand new supplement that is a polyphenol complex. It’s used most often to lessen occasional aches and pains, better sleep and for stiffness. I use this one for occasinal muscle soreness or to help with sleep when feeling stressed or just not well.

Resveratrol(Polygonum cuspidatum)

many studies have been done and shown its effectiveness against cancer, effects on diseases involving inflammation, diabetes and cell apoptosis(cell suicide). Ellagic Acid(pomegranate)

Studies indicate pomegranates to be beneficial to type 2 diabetics. Per webmd, it is used as a treatment for internal parasites in some countries plus 60+ studies are registered with the National Institutes of Health for 2015 for various ailments such as lymphoma, diabetes, memory, kidney disease and osteoporosis. It will be great to see the results from all these studies as they come about. Interesting! Proanthocyanidins (grape seeds)

Known to bond with collagen for youthful skin benefitting its elasticity, flexibility and more. Some studies show them effective against tumors. More research is being done too! Yay! Bring it on! I love natural options for fighting disease.

Curcumin from Turmeric Root

Promising studies are being done that show this substance has positive effects on inflammation and can support those with RA, IBS, Chron’s, Diabetes, and more.

Ginger

Anti-inflammatory, high in anti-oxidants soothing to GI tract

Green tea extract(caffeine free)

NOW…the question is…why NOT to put these polyphenols in your body? I really don’t know the answer to that. I use it when I have exercised and am sore plus when the weather comes and the joints get a little stiff. I am in remission from my autoimmunes, but a good thunder storm still makes me feel a little off in my body and this helps. It also makes for an incredibly good night’s sleep.
